Lighting my driveway and side entrance to my house has been a nightmare to date. The overhead security light had a motion sensor that required you to jump through hoops in order to trip it. The security light on the side of my house used to illuminate the staircase worked whenever it wanted to. (This was because of mixed gauge wires and loose connections, causing a small fire in an unfastened metal junction box in my attic ... don't ask). Clearly, something had to be done.…
Recessed Lighting Project
I recently decided to add some recessed lighting in my family room. This was a much needed addition since the only light in the room was two CFL wall mounts on both sides of the fireplace (with the switch located on the other half of the room), and 2 end table lamps. On top of that, there was 1 receptacle which was on a switch, presumably intended for a floor lamp of sorts, but the receptacle was conveniently located next to the coax jack and I had all of my A/V equipment plugged in to it.…
With the demolition complete, electrical was next on the agenda. The checklist for electrical was: Remove all existing receptacles and wiring Replace all receptacle boxes with plastic, Carlon's Super Blue boxes Replace all receptacles with commercial grade, 20A Leviton outlets Replace all receptacle wiring with 12/2 WG Romex Install [4] 6" Halo H7ICAT cans Install [4] EcoSmart E26 10.5 Watt LED bulbs.…
Formally known as the 'Freakin Purple Room', (don't ask, it wasn't even purple, yet), we've decided to make it functional beyond just a place to store my tools. The upgrades include: New drywall - 5/8" Type X (60 minute fire rated) New electrical including new receptacles / boxes / wiring, dimmer, recessed lights, and dedicated AFCI circuit New laminate flooring New baseboard, door and window casings (including stool and apron around window) And of course,…
Recently I had a power failure last 3 seconds past the life of my UPS and now my most crucial server will no longer POST. Naturally. Luckily I had all data backed up to another server (which still powers on) but what if this wasn't the case? Is the data gone forever? Of course not. It's just a little more complicated since the data consisted of a RAID 5 with 3 SATA drives and LVM on top of that. How'd I get my data back? A little help from KNOPPIX, mdadm, modprobe, and LVM utilities.…
'Unc Nih'
Cutest, nephew, ever!
Wow ... long time no post. Since the site got a facelift, I've decided to try and be more proactive about making posts, adding projects to the Projects space, etc. (Oddly enough I recall saying this to myself a few other times before). Who knows, maybe this time will be different now that I've retired Drupal and Gallery for good, and am sticking to Confluene for content and http://picasaweb.google.com/nragusa  for pictures. And so on to the content.…
pick a disk. any disk. a catchy phrase, along with many others on bullet #4 of apple's new-features-for-leopard website. perhaps this should be rephrased to "pick a disk (and by any we mean either USB of Firewire attached locally, or connected to an AirPort Extreme™ and shared via Bonjour, and formatted with HFS+)". i guess the later wasn't as cool. ok. so what about those who don't have a USB of Firewire disk lying around? granted,…

new yankee stadium
over thanksgiving break, i was lucky enough to take a trip to the future home of the new york yankees. mr permahos (better known as amanda's papa) is a project manager for the new stadium and invited mr. rackover (amanda's dad), booty, and myself to take a tour with him around the construction site. the day started with a quick trip to the trailer office to suit up (hard hats and bright orange vests a must) followed by a quick trip into center field which is nothing more than a muddy,…
