xmms-shell
Posted January 16th, 2007 by nickThere's something about sitting at a desk and doing work all day long that makes my desk at home less appealing. I often find myself looking for alternative workspaces -- my bed for example is probably one of my favorites. Since all of my projects require the use of a computer (weird) I'm usually on my laptop. So here I am, laying in bed with my laptop, and in the mood to listen to music. Sure I have speakers on my laptop but I'd rather listen to music through my desktop speakers. Enter xmms-shell. This bad ass little app lets you take control of an instance of xmms running on a different tty. Not much to it -- ssh into the host running the instance of xmms, run the command, then boom, you can control all the functions of xmms through the command line. Type '?' to see a list of commands. Truly, easy listening...

nerd a.d,d,
Posted January 15th, 2007 by nicknerd –noun Slang.
1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.
a.d.d - from web md
1. "People with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have trouble controlling their behavior. They often have trouble finishing tasks..."
Don't you love the fact that they used 'computer nerd' as an example of a nerd? Well there's a reason for that. People of my profession... well, they're nerds. (You learn to embrace it after a while) So what do I mean by nerd a.d.d.? I can NOT for the life of me finish a nerd project of mine. I must go through 3-4 small (nerd) projects per week which I probably complete about 80% of the way. Here's the problem -- I'll read an article, I'll have a friend tell me about something, I'll have a new project at work, something will cause me to start a small project.
Day 1 -- I go home and start reading. Who knows, maybe I'll even start making progress by implementing something... which is dangerous by the way because I have this other quirk of not being able to go to sleep if I start working on something and it doesn't work - especially if it was something that was working before I started to tamper with it.
Day 2 -- Time to check up on the progress. Is it working? Sorta. Maybe I'll see if I can add this to it and get it really working.
What about that article I read on /. though?
No! Let's get back to this.
Day 3 -- Is it still working? Good. What else is next?
So what did I gain from this project? Well, I can tell someone that I did it. I've successfully set it up at home. Maybe I even have a trick to tell you because it didn't work right away but I found the answer is some random forum after spending an hour or two googling. Do I truly know it? Nope. How well will I know it in a couple months from now? Most likely not at all.
So what's the moral of the story? Time to be a little more consistent. Really what it comes down to is I can't allow myself to start the next project until the project in the moment is complete. Trac is brilliant and made just for this purpose -- complete with a wiki, source control browser, even a mini ticket tracking system all built in.
Next project? Build www.babylathren.com and finish it! Potential projects?
